Reframing Life: From Hustle to Embracing the Pause

Instead of  'do your best,' how about 'do nothing and just be?' Yes, you heard it right. As I reflected recently, I realized that I appreciate the power of contentment and simplicity. This mindset shift started when my husband and I were having an amazing dinner at a cozy restaurant in Amsterdam.  It had six tables, maybe fewer. When we asked the owner why he didn’t expand and make it bigger, he surprised us.  This wasn’t a new startup; it had been around for ten years!  He simply said, “No need, we enjoy it small. Sometimes we add a few tables when we feel like it”. This got me thinking. In times when we push ourselves and others to always strive, be the best, be unstoppable, active all the time, planning, creating, and exploring (which is technically still work), I started to appreciate the times when we just sit and do nothing. Get bored. Draw to enjoy, not to master it. Write to express, not to become a writer. Study to learn, not to get a certification....

Signs of Stress that No One Talks About

In today's fast-paced world, recognizing the signs of stress is not just beneficial, it's essential. As a psychologist, I frequently encounter people experiencing a range of symptoms showing elevated stress levels.  Surprisingly, many are unaware that these symptoms are manifestations of stress, and even more importantly, that they can be effectively addressed and treated. Stress can show up as: 1. Heaviness in the heart and chest: A sensation of weight or pressure in the chest. 2. Breathing difficulties: rapid or shallow breathing patterns. 3. Stomach and intestinal Issues: like nausea or stomach pain. 4. Headaches and difficulty concentrating: these can also impair cognitive functions and mental clarity especially at work. 5. Neck and shoulder Tension: due to unconscious muscle contractions triggered by anxiety. 6. Lower back pain: chronic or acute discomfort in the lower back, exacerbated by stress-induced tension and muscle tightness. 7. Numbness: a feeling of emotional d...

Your Safe Space

Do you have a safe space? 🧠You can soothe your amygdala (the emotion-processing powerhouse in your brain) by inducing a sense of safety and gratitude. Here's how: 1. Identify Your Safe Space: Close your eyes and mentally visualize a real, comforting place. For me, it's my hometown balcony. 2. Immerse Your Senses:  Picture the details - what you see, feel, smell, and hear. Transport yourself there mentally. I see mountains, hear birds, and smell my coffee. (or maybe it's just the fasting effect☕️). 3. Assign a Word: Pick a word that resonates with this place.  Mine is ‘home’. Repeat it silently for a few minutes. 💕Voila! Writing this down already makes me feel better. Take home message: ✨   Remember your chosen word whenever you need a moment of calm.  So, what is your safe space?  If you're experiencing challenges in processing difficult emotions or establishing healthy relationships with yourself or others, don't hesitate to reach out to me for personal...

One Year of KindMind by Dana

Exactly one year ago, I published my first blog.  Launching KindMind by Dana (KMD) was not just a personal milestone but a commitment to contribute to our community's well-being through education and awareness. In this blog, I discuss different topics on mental health, with a specific focus on anxiety and trauma.  Here are some of the most viewed blogs from the past year: 1️⃣ What Does It Take To End Pain? 2️⃣ Letting Go and Holding On: Five Green Flags for Healthy Friendships 3️⃣ Waking Up With Anxiety It warms my heart when I receive messages from people sharing specific sentences that made them realize that what they felt or thought was indeed 'normal’.  Knowing that we all experience suffering, and we share in this collective human experience.  That’s Common humanity - an essential factor in self-compassion, isn't it?  Through this realization, not only do we feel connected to others, but we can also shift our perspective towards ourselves with love an...

Workplace Inclusion, Support, and Kindness

When considering workplace accommodations, my thoughts immediately turn to those for disabilities that may not be visible. How do individuals with mental health disorders or learning difficulties get accommodations when their challenges aren't apparent and they may hesitate to discuss them openly? Digging into this topic, given my passion for inclusion and special needs, I've found that creating psychological safety is crucial. People need an environment where they feel comfortable disclosing their needs, expecting support rather than facing stigma. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) has adopted a shift from a ‘charity-based’ to a ‘rights-based’ perspective. This urges companies to adopt policies specifically addressing special needs, safeguarding individuals' rights, and avoiding judgment or dismissal. There are many accommodations recommended to foster healthy workplace environments for people struggling with mental health il...

Self-love for Valentine’s Day!

Someone told me the other day, 'I don't celebrate Valentine’s Day because I don't have anyone in my life.' 🧐 This got me thinking.  While some see it as just a commercial thing, there are lots of reasons to celebrate Valentine’s Day, even if you're flying solo! 🥰 How about dedicating this Valentine’s Day to self-love?  I personally see Valentine’s Day as a beautiful reminder of the love surrounding us, from friends and family to our significant other. Most importantly, it reminds us of the love we have for ourselves!  Why not take this day to appreciate our own journey and the love within us?  At the end of the day, we are love (YES!), and we have the choice of how to express it and with whom to share it! Here are some self-love practices you can consider today: ❤️ Say no to overcommitments; cancel your afternoon meetings and book yourself a yoga or cycling class. ❤️ Engage in activities you love – do your nails, watch your favorite show, go for a walk, and ...
